Different Types of Operating Systems

If you are just getting acquainted with computers then you have a lot of catching up to do. The world is increasingly becoming dependent on computers and there would soon come a time when in order to get along with the world, you would need some computer skills. In fact, many places in the western world have that kind dependency on computers already. Without it, our modern civilization would cease to function in the way that we have gotten used to.

The most basic step that you can take I mastering computers is to get familiarize yourself with everything that has to do with it. This might not be an easy thing to accomplish when you are not into technology but that should not discourage you from learning. The first thing that you should be familiar with is the hardware because that’s the easiest. Then you should move on to the software part of it.

Getting a grasp of the software part of computer technology is a bit harder when compared with familiarizing yourself with the hardware. You can see and handle the hardware but in order to understand the software you have to wrap your head around it. The most first thing to familiarize yourself with is the operating system.

The operating system is the program that makes the computer run. Without it you would not be able to use your computer hardware. It is what allows you to control and harness the power of the computer. There are several types of operating systems that are now available and there are several ways that you can classify operating systems, but the easiest one to understand, for someone who is just getting familiar with computers, is to classify them according to their makers, or the companies that actually use those systems.

Microsoft OS

These are the operating systems made by Microsoft and this is the one that you are likely to use. A vast majority of the computers use operating systems that were developed by Microsoft. These would include the various versions of Windows and Vista. This is the easiest one to use and learn because it was specifically developed to be user friendly.

Mac OS

These are the operating systems developed by Apple for use on their computers. Though when compared with Windows, few people use it, the users of Apple computers have a loyal following.

Linux

These are the operating systems that are based on the Unix system. It can be used under the open source and distribution system which means that anyone can use it and modify it. There are few users of this OS and most of those are technically advanced users.

These are the most common types of operating systems that you should be aware of. These are the only ones that you are likely to use in your everyday dealings and even with your business. In fact, if you are not planning on doing anything that’s very technical, you can just stick with Microsoft or Apple OS.
